After suppressing Han guerrillas in the first decade of their rule, Japanese authorities engaged in bloody campaigns against the Indigenous people residing in mountainous regions, culminating in the Musha Incident of 1930. The Han and Indigenous populations were classified as second- and third-class citizens, and many prestigious government and business positions were closed to them. On 25 May 1895, a group of pro-Qing high officials proclaimed the Republic of Formosa to resist impending Japanese rule. Inhabitants wishing to remain Qing subjects had to move to mainland China within a two-year grace period, which few saw as feasible. The mountainous areas were still largely autonomous under the control of Indigenous peoples.
Although there are minor differences between Taiwanese and mainland Chinese etiquette, much of traditional Chinese table manners apply to Taiwan too. As with Chinese cuisine elsewhere, food in Taiwan is generally eaten with chopsticks and served on large plates placed at the center of the table and shared among multiple people. Night markets are also a good place to try some delicious local Taiwanese fare at attractive prices. Most Taiwanese people enjoy their breakfast in breakfast bars (早餐店), which are almost everywhere.

Today, Beijing, led by the CCP, asserts that there is only one China and that Taiwan is part of it. According to the 1947 constitution, the territory of the ROC is according to its “existing national boundaries”. In 2012 the Mainland Affairs Council issued a statement clarifying that Outer Mongolia was not part of the ROC’s national territory in 1947.

The results made Taiwan’s national baseball team one of the top-ranked teams in the WBSC World Rankings. Baseball is commonly considered Taiwan’s national sport and is a popular spectator sport. Local and international Taiwanese cuisine, including its history, is a politically contentious topic. Taiwan has a high density of 24-hour convenience stores, which provide services on behalf of financial institutions or government agencies, such as collection of parking fees, utility bills, traffic fines, and credit card payments.
